Good Shepherd Announcements for Sunday August 11

Daily Prayers

The current Special Appeal is going well, we have obtained 71% of our $75,000.00 goal. Please prayerfully consider contributing to the Major Maintenance fund.

Our Family Schedule
The Our Family Vision: a village of families focused on loving and serving Christ and each other. Where church is Social Life (going outside the church walls).

Game Day Today after the 10:15 a.m. worship service.

Lori Joiner Event on September 7 at 6 p.m. We are all in this together. Join Lori Joiner for an evening of inspiring discussion about raising children. Cost $10/person including dinner, dessert, and childcare.

October 13: Prayer, Pizza, Pumpkins, and Prizes on Game Day. Come to church in your unloading pumpkin clothes, have some pizza, and stay to unload pumpkins. The Our Family group will have prizes for the kids.

Our Family Service Day at Good Shepherd on November 3 following the 10:15 a.m. worship service.

Our Family will be sponsoring the Live Nativity on December 12. If you are a member of Good Shepherd, please sign-up to bring baked goods and have your children participate in the Live Nativity; particularly on this night.

The Grief Support Group will be starting a new eight week class in August. The meetings will be held every Thursday, from August 15- October 8 from 7:00-8:30p.m. in Rm 205. If you have recently (or not so recently) lost a loved one and are still struggling with the pain of loss, please join us in a safe place to learn about the grief process and experience the healing that comes from sharing your story. For more information, please contact Dave Kerkes at dkerkes@earthlink.net or Anne Palmer at annepalmer2014@gmail.com.  A one time $20 donation to cover the costs of materials is suggested.

Come to the Great Hall this Friday, August 16 at 7 p.m. for our OLD-FASHIONED HYMN SING. Bring the beverages of your choice (nothing stronger than beer or wine, we will have water and lemonade), and a finger food to share. We’ve got copies of the old Methodist favorite, The Cokesbury Hymnal, so we’ll open the book and sing the songs you request!

Why should your child join our church choir? We teach them to sing! Children who cannot yet follow a melody CAN learn to – if they come to rehearsal regularly. Those who already sing tunefully will learn vocal and music reading skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. When Rally Day rolls around, plan on being a part of the Good Shepherd Music Ministry. “We don’t just teach music to children. We lead children to experience, love, and serve God through music!”

Healing ministry during communion in the chapel. Members of Good Shepherd’s chapter of the Order of St. Luke offer healing prayer ministry in the sanctuary chapel during communion at both the 8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. services. The chapter also hosts a class on Christian healing using the DVD series “The Healing Miracles of Jesus,” second Sundays at 11:45 a.m in the Brinsden Room. Contact Barbara Hemphill, at bookworm@texashemphills.com or 281-851-7504 with any questions.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the church’s Rally Day, Sunday August 25, right after the 10:15 service (the only service on Rally Day). Every small group and program offered by the church will be on display so please come check us out!

A Pint for a Pint! The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will welcome blood donors Sunday, August 25, 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in their mobile unit stationed in the front parking lot. As a thank you, Blue Bell is offering each donor a voucher for a pint of ice cream. Who can donate? Please call Mary Ellen Yale 281-360-7181 or www.giveblood.org/faq.aspx

Feed My Lambs, hope everyone has had/is having a good summer. We will be getting together August 27 to make sack lunches for our clients in White Oaks apartments. We meet at 10:30 a.m. in the Mission Center to assemble the sacks and then leave to deliver. If you can help with either or both of these activities, please notify Maureen at wheatley@cebridge.net. We will have a booth at Rally Sunday so please stop by if you have not worked with us before. It is a great way to meet new people.

Did you know that Humble ISD will start classes August 12 this year?? With this in mind HAAM started distributing school supplies in June! Also they will start Sneakerdoodles – “so no foot is left behind”. Donations of new sneakers will be accepted May 1 through August 16.

Forward Day by Day is a quarterly devotional magazine printed by Forward Movement, an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Our distribution of Forward Day by Day is made possible by a gift from the family of Elizabeth and Buck Sloan in their memory. If you prefer to access the daily mediations online, you can go to http://forwardmovement.org/Today-s-Meditation/ where you can also find links to the daily lectionary Bible readings.

“The Good Shepherd Steward”
“Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Luke 12:33-34

Jesus was able to capture a profound truth in just a few words…”where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” A good steward will often ask, Where is my heart, what is my treasure?

Our new book is The Physics of Angels by Matthew Fox and Rupert Sheldrake. A contemporary scientist and an Episcopal priest discuss ancient church texts on angels and angelology. Saturdays 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Rm 206
This open and ongoing group is a part of the World Community for Christian Meditation. We gather at 9:00 and spend a few minutes for check-in and introductions. We listen to an audio presentation on a meditation related topic for 15-20 minutes and conclude with a 25-minute silent meditation.  To learn more, visit www.wccm.org.

What is New Light? New Light is a family oriented service integrating our youngest Christians. We meet Sundays at 10:15 a.m. in the Great Hall. Our young Christians read, lead and participate in all aspects of the service.  The music is friendly and the sermon is for the family. On most second Sundays of the month, we have a complete communion service. Other Sundays, we will join the congregation in the Nave for Eucharist. Come visit our family.

Father Steve Capper of the Lord of the Streets will be visiting us on Sunday, September 22. He will be here to lead a class at 9:00 am and will preach (and maybe celebrate) at the 10:15 service.  We will be collecting donations for his ministry (LOTS) at the service.
